What to Expect at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

Welcome to Tanzania!

Landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) marks the official beginning of your adventure. Whether you’re here to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, embark on a safari, or both, knowing what to expect when you arrive helps everything run smoother. Here’s a complete breakdown so you can walk off the plane with confidence.

Step-by-Step: What Happens When You Land at JRO

🛬 1. Disembark and Health Screening

Once the plane doors open, you’ll deplane onto the tarmac and walk into the small, organized terminal. Before passport control, you may undergo a temperature check or show your Yellow Fever certificate (especially if arriving from or transiting through certain countries).

🛂 2. Visa & Immigration

Visitors can apply for a Tanzania visa in advance or on arrival. If purchasing on arrival:

  • Visa Fee (USD): $50 (most nationalities), $100 for US citizens (multiple entry)
  • Payment is accepted in cash (USD) or credit card
  • Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months

Immigration lines can be slow—expect 30–90 minutes depending on traffic.

🧳 3. Baggage Claim

After passport control, proceed to the luggage carousel. Porters are available if needed, though Climb Kili staff will also assist outside.

💼 4. Customs

Have your bag scanned at customs and declare any high-value electronics if requested. Don’t bring plastic bags—they’re banned in Tanzania.

🚐 5. Climb Kili Pickup

Once you exit the building, look for our friendly staff wearing Climb Kili uniforms and holding a sign with your name. Even if your flight is delayed, we’re there waiting. We’ll escort you directly to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Arrival

💵 Currency Exchange

There’s a currency booth inside the terminal, but rates are often better in town. Many travelers withdraw Tanzanian shillings from ATMs in Arusha or Moshi instead.

📱 SIM Cards & Wi-Fi

Airtel and Vodacom booths are sometimes available for purchasing local SIM cards. However, we recommend doing this in town if the booth is closed. Most hotels provide free Wi-Fi.

🧾 Keep These Handy

  • Printed eVisa confirmation (if applied in advance)
  • Return flight details
  • Hotel reservation from Climb Kili
